Quebracho Bench

$950.00

This stunning piece of wood is from the Quebracho tree which is native to the tropical hardwood forests of South America. The wood derives its name from the Spanish phrase, quebrar bracha, which means axe breaker because it is so difficult to work with. It is one of the hardest, heaviest and most dense woods in the world. When placed in water it sinks like a stone. It is very difficult to work with but so beautiful to see. When finished it takes on a luster I have never seen before in any other wood.

Quebracho is nearly impossible to find in the United States, but my wood guy Charlie up in Murphy’s acquired this piece and several smaller pieces. The moment I saw this wood I just knew I had to have it, but I had no idea what to do with it because of its weird shape. So, it wound up leaning in a corner of my shop for two years. Eventually I designed this bench with legs made from the smaller, fire damaged pieces. I call this a bench only because of its height. But to show off all of its true beauty it really needs to be on a riser or pedestal. It truly is a work of art.

While it would be impossible to make another piece like this, something similar could be made out of some other exotic wood. I am always on the lookout for beautiful and unusual pieces of wood in order to create something striking and rare. Send me a message if you see something you would like me to re-create for your home or if you have a creative idea of your own that you would like to see come to life. This piece is 48 inches long and stands 21 inches high. The width varies from 11 to 15 inches.
